What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is a globally recognized English language proficiency test. IELTS assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English across various contexts.
People commonly take IELTS for purposes such as study abroad, work, immigration, and professional recognition. The test is jointly developed and managed by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge Assessment English.
IELTS Test Format
- The IELTS test consists of four main sections:
- Listening: This section assesses your understanding of spoken English, including conversations, lectures, and monologues.
- Reading: In this part, you read passages and answer questions related to comprehension, vocabulary, and inference.
- Writing: You complete two writing tasks: one describing a graph or chart and another writing an essay on a given topic.
- Speaking: The speaking test evaluates your ability to express yourself verbally on everyday topics.
- The total test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes, with the listening, reading, and writing sections taken on the same day. The speaking section is scheduled separately.

Academic vs. General Training IELTS:
Academic IELTS: This version is primarily for individuals planning to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level in an English-speaking country. It assesses your ability to understand academic texts, lectures, and discussions.
General Training IELTS: Designed for those seeking to work, migrate, or undertake vocational training abroad, this version focuses on everyday communication skills. It includes topics relevant to work, social situations, and general life.
One-Skill Retake:
Sometimes, test takers may be satisfied with their performance in most sections but want to focus on improving a specific skill. (This format is only available in Computer-based IELTS)
In a one-skill retake, the individual chooses to retake only the section they want to improve. For example:
- If someone scored well in Listening, Reading, and Writing but needs to enhance their Speaking skills, they can retake only the Speaking section.
- Conversely, if someone wants to improve their Writing score, they can retake only the Writing section.
Advantages of One-Skill Retake:
- Saves time and effort: Instead of redoing the entire test, test takers can concentrate on the area they need to improve.
- Flexibility: IELTS allows candidates to retake individual sections within a specific time frame.
- Targeted practice: Focusing on a single skill allows for more targeted preparation and practice.
